Chapter 17
Raff was stunned at the depth of Trist’s anger and hurt. He’d been furious, ready to take her apart for going to Ascena, planning to run, but then she turned on him, savagely. She’d also turned on Rusty which gave him a degree of satisfaction. He was embarrassed though. Walking around with Ascena’s scent on him. The other shifters would know that he’d been with a woman, maybe know it was Ascena. It didn’t really matter though. Nothing mattered but Trist.
He let her go, watched as she stalked into the trees, waited until she shifted then he bundled his clothes, tied them around his neck and shifted too. He’d come back for his jeep in the morning. He needed to make sure she got home safely. Someone had killed a woman; a murderer was on the loose and he had fucked up enough already. Her hurt ripped him apart. He couldn’t imagine losing her.
He knew when her anger wore off, saw her slow, then move into a gentle lope. Her direction was unerring. She knew exactly where she was going, and thready relief stole through him when he saw she was heading to her cabin. He wanted to see her home safely, then he would go home, shower and go to her. She was right though. He was an unthinking prick. Ascena’s scent all over him and he forgetting about it in his anger towards her.
He sat in the shadows as she entered the cabin. No lights, but he knew she didn’t need them. Shifters could see well at night. After it was quiet, he loped home, shifted on his doorstep then went inside, threw his clothes in the washer and turned it on, trying to eradicate Ascena’s scent. What a fucking stupid day this was. All his fault. Too used to being the king of the castle, throwing his weight around. Stupid insensitive prick and he’d hurt two women he cared about in the process.
He turned on the shower, waited until it was hot, then stepped under the stream, soaping himself everywhere, washing his hair twice, rinsing it. He hadn’t realized Ascena’s depth of feelings for him. Not before today. Maybe he forgot that she was more than a self-possessed shifter, a female alpha. He took because he thought that’s what they both wanted. She never said otherwise, but to be fair, he never asked. He was faithful to her though, over the course of the relationship. Until Trist, there had been no other woman to come between them.
He sighed as he stepped from the shower and towelled himself off. He was going to go to Trist tonight, explain why he smelled like Ascena and then seduce her. That was the problem between them. They were meant to be mates and they were fighting instinct, in each other’s space but not coming together. It was not how pair bonds worked. He dressed, jeans, a T-shirt and canvas shoes, then locked up and headed across the field, walking, his hands in his pockets, letting the warm summer night soothe him.
